Connect with Empathy, But Lead with Compassion

“Sympathy,” “empathy,” and “compassion” are often used interchangeably – but they’re not the same thing. Today’s leaders, faced with the overwhelming challenge of supporting their employees through a two-years-and-counting pandemic, need to understand the difference. Whereas sympathy and empathy are emotions felt for and with other people, respectively, compassion goes a step further, signifying the intention to actively help others.
